“Before becoming a Hilltop Scholar, I often didn’t feel heard in school. Hilltop Scholars gave me something to look forward to after school. During school, I was restricted to solving problems in a standard way, but in Hilltop Scholars, I can just be creative. I am able to find my own way through a problem using critical thinking skills.”
— Diedre, 5th grade scholar
I’ve been a part of the Peace Community Center Programs since 2016. Before attending Saint Martin’s, I would go to the Peace Community Center everyday after school to do homework and hang out with my friends. Being in this program was very beneficial for me, especially once I started my Running Start journey. I was able to get help with school from my academic coach, Ms. Kelsey. Taking college classes while in high school was very stressful, time-consuming, and new to me, but I’m glad I had that extra support from the Peace Program. Socially, I was reserved and only talked to the people that I knew, however, when I came to Peace I was able to open up and be myself.
My future goals, besides earning my degree, is to pursue an internship this coming spring at the MultiCultural Child and Family Hope Center. I wanted to do my internship with this agency, not only because of all the great programs and services they provide but also because it is right in my own neighborhood. I believe that it’s only right to give back to the community that has given so much to me throughout my entire life and what better way to give back to my own community than by serving the people within it through this agency!
